THE BRITISH IN INDIA BOOK PRIZES 2025

Proceeds from lectures fund two annual prizes for non-fiction historical writing on British India: The British in India Book Prize and The British in India Military History Book Prize. The winners of the 2024 prizes for books published in 2023 can be found here.

The British in India Book Prize 

An annual prize of £1000 for an original work that makes a significant contribution to advancing knowledge or understanding of the British in South Asia and is the author’s first or second sole book publication.

​

The British in India Book Prize 2025

The British in India Book Prize 2025 rewards excellence in writing about the history of the British in South Asia by first- or second-time authors of books published in 2024. The winning entry will be decided by a panel of three judges.

​

Time frame

Submissions for the 2025 Prize open on 1 September 2024 and close on 31 December 2024. The winner will be announced in May 2025.

Organisation

The British in India Historical Trust invites publishers, including university presses, commercial publishers and non-UK publishers, to submit a list of books they would like the Trust to call in for consideration. The Trust may also call in any other eligible book. A shortlist will be selected from which the winner will be chosen.

The British in India Military History Book Prize

An annual prize of £500 for an original work that makes a significant contribution to advancing knowledge or understanding of any aspect of the military history of the British in South Asia up to 1947 and is the author’s first or second sole book publication.

The British in India Military History Book Prize 2025

The British in India Prize for Military History 2025 rewards excellence in writing about the military history of the British in South Asia up to 1947 by first- or second-time authors of books published in 2024. The winner will receive £500. The winning entry will be decided by a panel of three judges.
